Why Test & Tag?

Its the Australian Standard Set by Our Government - Workcover Australia

Electrical testing is required by law In Australia, the AS/NZS 3760 standard outlines the guidelines for testing and tagging electrical equipment. This standard, also known as "In-Service Safety Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment and RCDs", ensures workplaces have safe electrical environments for all work places no matter the size or structure.

To be compliant work places must complete tag and testing -

  • Construction sites, mining & fabrication; every 3 months

  • Factories, Warehouses and Workshops: Every six months.

  • Environments with Heat, Dust, or Moisture: Every 12 months.

  • Residential-type Environments: Every 24 months.

  • Low Risk Environments (no flexing cords): Every 5 years.

Workcover can conduct workplace inspections to validate if the site is compliant. The primary goal of test and tag procedures is to ensure the safety of electrical equipment in the workplace, preventing electrical hazards and accidents. Failing to comply with testing and tagging requirements in Australia can lead to fines and other legal consequences. Businesses can face fines, and in more severe cases, especially if non-compliance results in injury or fatality, they may face prosecution and even imprisonment for individuals in charge of workplace safety.

Your Business Insurance

Your personal business insurance may be compromised. Failing to conduct proper testing and tagging of electrical equipment can potentially lead to insurance coverage being voided or claims being denied. Insurance policies often include clauses requiring compliance with relevant safety standards, including those related to electrical equipment. If a fire or electrical fault occurs due to a non-tested or improperly tagged appliance, the insurance company may refuse to pay for damages or injuries. Many insurance policies require proof of compliance with safety standards, including regular testing and tagging of electrical equipment according to Three Pin Testing.

If an electrical accident occurs due to non-compliance, the insurance company may deny coverage or increase premiums in the future. This is true even if there are no other employees besides the business owners.
